My brother recently bought a Prius and is very happy with it. The benefits to the environment and the savings at the gas pump are obvious. But are you seriously considering taking that next step? Do you already own a hybrid vehicle? If so, are you pleased with the purchase? If not, would you buy one? Why or why not?

Yes I have considered it … and I am a car dealer. The Prius is a good choice, also consider the Honda Civic and Accord hybrids. The Accord is a V6 Hybrid. Many states even offer tax credits for Hybrids purchases. The only neg. I can see in regards to a Hybrid is repairs after the warranty as many mechanics I deal with will not touch one as they are afraid of the high electrical current with the electric engine. They have not been trained on them and just don’t know enough about them so you would have to prob. take it back to the dealer. Of course with Honda and Toyota rep on reliabilty this would prob. never be a problem.

by buying a hybrid you reduce the demand at the pump, thus reducing profits. to compinsate for the reduced profits they will only increase the price to recover their losses. then everyone who wont give in to the hybrid fad, or are unable to finance such a venture will have to pay the price.

I have thought about it but they really don’t save you money over the long haul. You have to want to do it for the environment.

Yes, I own a hybrid; a 1977 peugeot moped. It’s great on gas and i get good excercise when I want.
I’m starting to see Prius owners looking for replacement battery packs already. At a couple grand a pop and the initial premium they don’t really make that much sense.
I used to own a VW diesel rabbit that got over 55 mpg. If I still owned it (someone else just had to buy it from me) I would probably convert it to bio diesel.
I think the best thing to do is to buy a motorcycle. I can get a brand new sport bike for less than $3000 that tops out over 100 mph and returns 75-80 mpg. Until the US starts allowing the import of super high mileage eco-friendly econo diesels (80+ mpg) we’re stuck with marketing gimmicks like "hybrids".

I had thought about it prior to ’speaking’ to Yahoo!Answers folk. Many told me that you have to replace a very expensive battery every few years, and mechanics don’t know how to fix the engines since they are so ‘new’. I have also heard that if you do not do a lot of highway driving, that the amount of gas you use is roughly the same as a traditional car. I think I will hold off on buying a hybrid for a few more years, until they are more popular, and all the ‘bugs’ are out of them, so to speak.
