How to Start a Garage Sale

Believe it or not, it isn’t that difficult. With ample preparation, a garage sale is an easy and a fun thing to do.

The following are basic steps to get a garage sale up and running.

Set a date and prepare

When organizing a garage sale, it is best to know the tentative date when the garage sale will begin. Set a specific date and make sure that you have no commitments other than that of the garage sale. If you do, chances are, you will be too exhausted to do anything else. Even if you do have the energy to do two things at once, you will definitely suffer because of your lack of focus. A garage sale is a garage sale, prepare for it.

It would also be best if you ask neighbors and friends to join your garage sale efforts. It would be nice to receive a helping hand as well as split the efforts and the proceeds from the sale.

Set a price and post it

Nothing is more annoying in a garage sale than an item that has no price. Early on, create an organized system to price items. This helps make selling convenient as buyers have a good idea as to how much an item is and how much they should and could fork up.

As much as possible, colored labels are good to use. These could be purchased at drug stores or stores that sell office supplies.

It would also be easy for you to define which item costs how much if the labels have a specific color for a particular price range. For instance, a blue label could mean that the item costs fifty cents or a red label could mean the items is priced at a dollar. This is an effective way to ward off redundant questions from buyers.

Believe it or not, there also exists a label that already has the labels: fifty cents, twenty five cents, one dollar written on them so all you have to do is stick it on and stick it good.

Prepare a space for a good garage sale place

Try to choose an area in your house which you think could serve as a good venue for the garage sale. Take note, there should at least be two areas: one for putting prices on the items and one for selling them.

All in all, preparation is still the over-all best way to organize a garage sale. In the long run, the process will be easier both for you and your buyers.

6. You may distribute flyers that will advertise your garage sale. You may go to your community’s commercial places like the coffee shop, grocery stores, community centers, laundries, and gasoline stations to post your advertisements.

7. You should put up your cash table closer to the entrance. Make sure to have plenty of dollar changes, a ledger book, plastic bags, pen, and a calculator that are important materials that you may need during your garage sale.

You should be always cheerful every time customers look at your items. Talk to your customers and make them feel comfortable with the place. You may influence them to buy your things if they are properly attended.

The state of California is getting in on the act with what might be the mother of all garage sales. Forklift loads of “stuff” is getting set out for the great California garage sale. It’s not the first state garage sale but it is probably the biggest — with promises of great savings. “It’s a good opportunity for folks to come in, especially in this economy, and buy something they really need,” said Eric Lamoureux of the Department of General Services, which is conducting the garage sale. Lamoureux said buyers can expect credenzas for $40, maybe even less. Cell phones will also be at a fraction of the cost of new, while computers can be had for around $50 and Sacramento Kings bobblehead collections will also be for sale. Hundreds of cars are up for auction. Expect to pay between a $1000 and $4000 for most. While buyers will get a deal, officials warn there won’t be any test drives. Credit cards or cashier’s checks will be accepted for vehicle purchases.
